Born in Dresden, Saxony in 1825, artist Friedrich Richard Petri (1824-1857) matriculated in the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden at the age of fourteen. He won six awards during his eleven years under the tutelage of Adrian Ludwig Richter and Julius Hübner and won six awards. After joining the failed 1849 May Uprising in Dresden, Petri immigrated with his family to the United States. In 1851, they arrived in Texas and eventually settled on a farm near Fredericksburg. The Wupperman’s were a family of Texas Germans, with ties to various other Texas German families such as the Herman Lungkwitz family, the Petri family, and the von Rosenberg family. Otto Wuppermann immigrated to Texas from Germany around 1848, married Elise Tips in 1850, and returned to Düsseldorf, Germany in 1863.
